After one of our several research visits to the birthplace and Christian upbringing locations of A.A. Cofounder Dr. Bob, we established the Dr. Bob Core Library in the North Congregational Church of St. Johnsbury.

The entire Smith family attended this church four, and sometimes five, times a week. And we realized that very little had been researched, gathered, or published about Dr. Bob’s Christian upbringing in his boyhood village of St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The more we researched, the more we found. And there is currently a vibrant move in St. Johnsbury itself to bring the community’s importance to A.A. and its history back to public attention.

Our first major contribution along these lines was to publish Dick B. and Ken B., Dr. Bob of Alcoholics Anonymous: His Excellent Training in the Good Book as a Youngster in Vermont. See www.dickb.com/drbobofaa.shtml. This landmark book has now been accompanied by a number of Dick B. articles posted on the internet. And it has two companion books to fill out the picture:

(1) Dick B., The Conversion of Bill W.: More on the Creator’s Role in Early Alcoholics Anonymous. www.dickb.com/conversion.shtml.

(2) Dick B. and Ken B., Bill W. and Dr. Bob: The Green Mountain Men of Vermont. This later book shows the immense number of parallels in the Christian upbringing of both Bill and Bob as youngsters in the State of Vermont. It depicts many other facets of the great influence Vermont has had on the origins, history, founding, founders, and original program of the Akron A.A. Christian Fellowship founded by Bill W. and Dr. Bob in June of 1935.
