Many now know that Dr. Bob said early AAs regarded the Book
of James, Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians 13 as absolutely
essential. You can find the statement in The
Co-Founders of Alcoholics Anonymous: Biographical Sketches Their Last Major
Talks. Dr. Bob also stated that the old-timers believed the answers to
their problems were in the Bible; and that the basic ideas for the Steps came
from the early studies and efforts in the Bible.
Bill Wilson said the Book of James was such a favorite that
many early AAs wanted to call the A.A. Society “The James Club.” He and Bob
both said that Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount contained the underlying spiritual
philosophy of A.A.
For these reasons and because of the fundamental importance
of the Bible and the three segments in the founding and development of A.A., I
wrote about the foregoing many times. And I finally wrote The James Club and the Original A.A. Program’s Absolute Essentials.

and roots, I would strongly recommend reading the actual Book of James in the
Bible, and also my book The James Club. The
